On Friday 14 March, a small number of year 7 and 8 students from Holgate attended the STEM fair at the Retford Oaks Academy – an event designed to celebrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Our students enjoyed viewing all the presentations and information offered by various universities and colleges related to STEM careers. They discussed the use of robot dogs with the UK Atomic Energy Agency, as well as materials science with various STEM presenters. Furthermore, they had the opportunity to use ‘Resus Annie’ with the NHS to practise their lifesaving skills.

Our joint year 7 and 8 quiz team were fantastic and managed to beat Retford Oaks Academy and Walton Academy in the STEM quiz, which involved multiple-choice rounds, Taskmaster-style lateral thinking, and practical skills. Our students were ably led by Alexandra, winning first place and receiving scientific calculators as prizes. Additionally, our science project students worked extremely hard, and Holly went on to win the top prize for her science display at the fair.

This event showcased the very best of Holgate to the various external groups, companies, and institutions present at the fair. A big well done to all who attended and, of course, to our winners.
